Understanding Set Rotation in Disney Lorcana

~ minute read

With the release of Fabled, Disney Lorcana celebrates two years of exciting gameplay around the world. Over this time, we’ve seen incredible matches across many countries and languages, and from this, Ravensburger has learned valuable lessons on how to keep Lorcana healthy for years to come.

Now, for the first time, Core Constructed is getting a set rotation. This is a big change that will affect how players build decks and prepare for local and major tournaments.

Let’s talk about what set rotation means, how it works in Lorcana, which sets are affected with the release of Fabled, and what players can expect at their local events.

What Is Set Rotation?

Set rotation is a common part of trading card games. It keeps competitive play fresh, balanced and easier to join for new players. In Lorcana, it means that only cards from the most recent sets will be allowed in the Core Constructed format. Older sets will rotate out and can no longer be used in official tournaments that follow this format.

This system helps with a few things. It keeps card power levels under control. It encourages players to try new strategies. Most importantly, it makes it easier for new players to build competitive decks without needing to track down older, harder-to-find cards.

Since Lorcana is now a global game, and some countries have only recently caught up with the English sets, rotation will help level the playing field for players everywhere.

How Rotation Will Work

Ravensburger has confirmed that rotation will begin with the release of Fabled in September 2025. At that time, the following four sets will rotate out of Core Constructed:

  • The First Chapter

  • Rise of the Floodborn

  • Into the Inklands

  • Ursula’s Return

That means Core Constructed events will only use the most recent sets, which will be:

  • Shimmering Skies

  • Azurite Seas

  • Archazia’s Island

  • Fabled

From now on, when a new season (4 sets) is complete the oldset season (4 sets) will rotate. It’s a simple rolling system that always keeps the format focused on the latest content.

Are There Any Exceptions?

Yes, there are. From the start, Fabled has been described as a transitional set. That means it’s designed to help ease players into the new rotated format.

Fabled contains a mix of reprinted cards and brand new ones. In total, there are 204 cards in the set, just like previous releases. Out of these, 171 are reprints from the first four sets that are rotating out. The remaining 33 cards are brand new and exclusive to Fabled.

This means many favourite cards will still be around, but now with updated art or rarities, and they will still be legal in Core Constructed thanks to their reprint in Fabled.

What’s New in Fabled?

Fabled also introduces two new card rarities that have never been seen in Lorcana before: Epic and Iconic.

  • There will be around 18 Epic cards in the set.

  • There will be 2 Iconic cards:

    • Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Prince

    • Minnie Mouse – Sweetheart Princess

These two Iconic cards are the rarest in Lorcana so far. They feature unique foiling and numbering, and will be difficult to pull. Collectors and competitive players alike will want to keep an eye out for them.

What About Other Formats?

The set rotation only affects Core Constructed, which is the main format used for organised play, league events, and major tournaments.

However, there’s also a new format being introduced called Infinity Format. This will allow players to use any cards from any set, except those that are officially banned. Infinity is ideal for casual games or those who want to keep playing their older decks without restrictions.
